Cable Chains

A cable chain is the simplest construction there is: identical round or oval links joined in a row, each one sitting at right angles to the last. It is what most people picture when they think "gold chain".

Why it is the usual choice for a pendant. The links are open and uniform, so a bail slides on easily and the chain hangs straight without twisting. Oval-link cable chains drape a little softer than round; round links hold their shape better under a heavier pendant.

Choosing a width. Under 2 mm is delicate and best on its own or with a light pendant. 2–4 mm handles most pendants. Above 4 mm a cable chain becomes a piece in its own right.
