Yes — 10K gold is good, and it is real gold. By law in Canada and the US, anything stamped 10K is genuine solid gold; 10K simply tells you how much pure gold is in the mix. It is the most hard-wearing of the common karats, which is exactly why it is a smart choice for jewellery you wear every day.
What "10K" actually means
Karat measures how much of a piece is pure gold out of 24 parts. 10K is 10 parts pure gold (about 41.7%) mixed with stronger metals like copper and silver. 14K is 14 parts (about 58.3%). That mix is not a shortcut — it is what makes gold wearable. Pure 24K gold is too soft to hold a clasp or a prong, so every piece of real gold jewellery is an alloy. 10K just leans a little harder and a little more affordable.
Does 10K gold tarnish or turn your skin green?
Solid 10K gold does not tarnish the way a thin gold coating does, and it will not leave a green mark. Because the whole piece is real karat gold all the way through, there is no base metal underneath to wear through and react with your skin. It can pick up dulling from lotions and daily oils, but that wipes off — a minute with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth brings the shine back. Our pieces are all solid karat gold, never plated, so what you see on day one is what you keep.
When to choose 10K — and when 14K makes sense
Both are solid gold and both are good. Pick 10K when you want maximum durability and value: it is the hardest of the common karats, so it resists scratches well, which suits everyday chains, hoops, and anything that takes knocks. Pick 14K when you want a slightly warmer, richer colour and do not mind a little more care or cost. There is no "fake" karat here — they simply behave differently, and the right one depends on the piece and how you live.
See it for yourself
Most of our catalogue is solid 10K gold for exactly these reasons. Browse the gold chains and gold hoop earrings to see the karat, colour, and exact measurements on each piece, all real solid gold. Still deciding between karats? Email info@jewelrytoremember.com and we will talk it through.
